Have been looking for a John ROLAND who served in the Civil War in Co
H. 17th OVI, and Josina Roland. Don't know if they were brother and
sister, or spouses. A kind lady sent me info on a marriage in Madison
co of Reuben Elliot and Josina Roland in 1866. I am trying to
establish the relationship, if any, to Barbara Ellen CRIST of
Fairfield co. She later married John E. Lane and they went to Shelby
co Illinois.

I discovered letters from the ROLANDS to Ellen CRIST in 1864 and 1865
in which they call her Cousin. It could be a courtesy title but I am
inclined to doubt that theory. The letters were datelined NEWPORT. I
was not aware that there was a Newport in Madison co, until I
received the marriage record and checked the map.

Any help on these Rolands would be helpful. They were apparently in
NEWPORT at least 1864 to 1866. Thanks very much for help, suggestions
