Deaths and births were supposed to be reported/recorded, but it wasn't
enforced. Especially if the family lived a fair distance from the
courthouse and the weather was bad.
What 'indexes' for death records did you search? Did you check with the
court houses?
If you have his death certificate WITH his date of birth, most lineage
societies will accept that as a 'proof' of birth.
