Ralph..
Please do assume some one is illegitimate because there are no records of
birth...that is like assuming that a person did not die because there is no
record of his death. Most people did not travel to the county seat to
record these records. The families recorded them in their bibles or the
minister recorded the baptism in the church. Mostly if recorded at the
court house, the minister did it maybe once a month if done at all. Even
though I have the baptism record of my grandfather in March 1885, his birth
was not was not recorded until 1897 by his mother. His brothers birth was
recorded by the pastor 1 month after his birth in 1888. Also, if he was in
the civil war check for his pension papers.

Denny,
Since Mahoning had been in existence for 15 years when he joined the army he
was probably not used to referring to it as Trumbull. I have searched
extensively in both Trumbull and Mahoning archieves with no success. Also,
checked census info for surrounding counties. I'm beginning to think he may
have been illegitimate and his birth not reported. I'll keep looking.
Thanks for your input.
Ralph
