Samuel J. Grant, of Middleport, Ohio, was born in Pomeroy, Ohio, April 10, 1838, and attended the schools at Pomeroy and Middleport, subsequently taking a commercial course at a business college in Pittsburg. When nineteen years old he began working in his father's flour mill at Middleport, remaining with him for two years, after which he went to New Orleans, as a clerk in a clothing store. Returning to Middleport in 1861, he went into partnership with his father and an uncle, William H. Grant (now retired), in the milling business, in which he is still engaged. He and a younger brother, Charles, are principal stockholders, the concern now being known as the Middleport Flour Co., and of which he is secretary and treasurer, and Charles Grants, president. In June, 1863, he enlisted in Company A, One Hundred and Fortieth regiment, Ohio volunteer infantry, Ohio National Guard, as first lieutenant, and was discharged from the service in the following fall. Middleport lodge, No. 363, F. & A. M. In 1860 he married Susannah E. Nye, daughter of John M. Nye, and eleven children have been born to them, named: Charles M. (deceased), Belle (deceased), A. Homer, Maud, Samuel J., Milton N., Carlton J., Helen, Bessie N., Ruth and John (deceased). John Grant, the, father of the above, was born in Maine, in 1811, and came to Meigs, county, Ohio, with his parents in 1819. In 1837 he married Mary G. Roup, by whom he had four children: Samuel J., Frank, Charles, Mary E. Teeter (deceased). The father was a tanner by trade, but after his marriage went into the milling business at Middleport, which he carried on until his death, in 1888. The mother died in 1879, at her home, in Middleport. Samuel Grant, the father of, John, was born in Maine, in 1775. In 1819 he settled in Meigs county, Ohio. In 18?? he married Hannah Davis, a cousin of the late Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States. Samuel Grant died in 1867. Mr. Samuel!
J. Grant is extensively interested in various different enterprises. In 1889, in company with his brother, Mr. Frank Grant, he established a brick manufacturing business, and this concern now carries on an immense business.
