I have noticed that several families made the trip from Mercer Co. to either
Missouri or Kansas in the latter part of the 19th century.

In fact, my Joseph Zender and wife Margaretha (Schuck) went west only to die
during a diptheria epidemic in 1891. They are buried in Newton, Kansas and I
have discovered that the Schuck family (Margaretha's parents and siblings)
apparently left Mercer Co. earlier for Kansas.

What was the reason the families went to MO and KS - free or low-priced land?
I am curious and would appreciate any information.
