Generally the funeral home will notify the Social Security Administration
when a death occurs. If not, the executor will need to notify them to have
the monthly check stopped.

A one-time payment of $255 is payable to the surviving spouse if he or she
was living with the beneficiary at the time of death, OR if living apart,
was receiving Social Security benefits on the beneficiary's earnings record.
If there is no surviving spouse, the payment is made to a child who was
eligible for benefits on the beneficiary's earnings record in the month of
death.

There are many people who think that when someone dies that Social Security
will pay a death benefit. That just isn't so. You can find out more at
www.ssa.gov

So don't blame your sister for not applying for a death benefit if there was
no reason to do so. My mother has been gone for 10 years and has never
appeared on any on line records. This is do to the fact she was not drawing
any type of Social Security at the time of her death and she had no
survivers eligable for a death benefit.
