Subject: [MERCER] Grand Lake Ohio Weekly

ListMembers: I am sending this current (ONLY) issue of the Grand Lake Ohio
Weekly to the list to introduce something you might be interested in. It
has commercial roots, but is an interesting site. The main site will act as
a home page for you if interested with e-mail, search engines, etc. You can
subscribe to the newsletter and if you have local interests, but live afar,
keep tabs on what is going on in Mercer Co.

How did I get this? I am not sure <grin>. I recently added my Mercer Co.
Geenalogy page to the search engine at GO.COM. The next thing I knew,
someone had submitted the same site to this Grand Lakes Ohio site (in the
non-profit category). The next day I got this newsletter. I am removing
the genealogy page site so I can get the entry set up more correctly. I
have added the page for the Genealogical Society and will provide a general
link to the Grand Lake Ohio site on the genealogy page as it does provide
access to local information for people who might be planning a visit or
doing research (it's a pretty nice site, really).

Sorry this is long. I will not be sending future issues to the list, but
you can subscribe yourself if interested. My main interest is alerting you
to this site since it comprehensively covers CURRENT Mercer Co. news,
features, events, businesses, etc. I apologize for this one-time
interruption in genealogy........

in west central Ohio. Enjoy A's and T's, along with 60's muscle cars and
those slick looking cars of today. Exhibit covers sidewalk and street area
around courthouse and parking lot at Celina Mutual Insurance Co. If you have
a collector car and would like to participate, contact Celina Chamber of
Commerce, 226 N. Main St., Celina. Phone: 419 586 2219 or Tom Saddler, 419
586 5131. Participant's cars will be judged for authenticity, condition and
other criteria and class winners awarded trophies. Participants also have
the option of joining in on the collector car parade held just prior to the
Grand Parade. In addition to collector cars, there is also a large display
of Goldwing Motorcycles on the sidewalk in front of the courthouse. Lots of
chrome and shiny paint make this a dazzling exhibit!

Antique Tractor and Truck Exhibit:
Take a walk down memory lane at this exhibit. Old tractors and trucks will
bring back memories of days gone by for many spectators. Gathered around the
Mercer County Historical Museum on E. Market St., stop in and enjoy some
well-cared for machinery that was probably used on a farm somewhere in
Mercer County some years before. Join in by sharing your stories about a
familiar piece of equipment on exhibit.

Police Bike Competition:
Another new event for Lake Festival 2000, see policemen and women from the
west central Ohio area compete for awards by using their specialized

a suspect. Competition includes riding, running and making the "arrest" in
the fastest time. Event location: Lakeshore Park and Lighthouse area.

hole in one. Fees include cart, meal after tournament, and other handouts.

types of games such as jousting, bungee run, etc. Children love these neat
games. Young adults enjoy them, too. Games available on courthouse lawn
Saturday, and Northshore Park on Sunday.

Walking Magic:
In the hour preceding the Grand Parade you'll enjoy magician Greg Hamilton
walking and performing magic in the Main & Market St. area. He will be
walking through spectators entertaining children, both young and old.

Grand Parade:
Another talked about event that has become one of the Lake Festival's
benchmarks is the Grand Parade. This is a large parade with over 150 units.
Enjoy high school bands, calliope, and a large variety of units. The Dayton
Shrine Club also participates. Bring your lawn chair and sit along the
street and enjoy one of America's greatest past times. This parade is the
largest in west central Ohio!

<------------Readers Stories------------>

What about the "Emergency" School Levy for Celina?
I won't even go into details about how ridiculous the
scare tactics in the publication by the Celina City Schools are.
Just by looking at the proposed cuts if the levy doesn't pass
makes you wonder. $82,000 for an attendance officer?

I feel the school levy is a petition to put more money
in the pockets of the higher up staff in the school system.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for teachers making a good salary.

But ever since we took religion out of the schools and replaced
it with technology there has been nothing but trouble. Not because
technology is a bad thing but at least in this school system it
seems it is only used to benefit the staff and not the students.

So go ahead and cut out the cell phones, laptops, private cars
and extended days off. I'm sure the students won't notice the difference.
