On August 28, 1783, a John Henry Mescher married a Maria Elisabeth Knapke in
Neuenkirchen,
Oldenburg, Germany. They are my fourth great grandparents. At least two of
their children had
descendants who came to the US. Each of them had siblings who had
descendants who came to the
US. Several of these immigrants came to Cincinnati while other others
headed to Mercer County,
Ohio. There are about a half dozen of us in email contact who are trying to
make the connections
between the US immigrants of these families and their families back in
Germany. It is
challenging. We may know that a John Henry or a John Bernard bought
property or married here, but
a check of the German church records surfaces at least a half dozen
candidates with those given
names. We have benefited greatly from the research of people like Luke
Knapke and are hoping to
make contact with some others with an interest in these families who would
like to trade
information. Much more detail can be supplied on request.
