Things aere going to be really crazy for a while. The
Rootsweb/Ancestry/MyFamily servers are overloaded plus some things are just
not working correctly at the moment. They are working furiously and the
administrative have overflowed.........
However, if you generally like Message Boards (which are web-based and
required your being logged on with your ISP), I suspect you will grow to
like these. The search functions will be very nice to have once the bigs
are worked out. This should be the last message I send regarding these
Boards unless something important develops. I don't expect I will myself
use them much, but so many are asking questions and this will get you
started on the right foot in using them......
Tips:
Go to http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=
Over at the far right, click on the "Login"
If you already have an Ancestry identity, you can use that. If not, use the
SignUp option and create a new one. Use something for your ID that you will
remember and be aware that everyone and his brother are signing up trying to
find a unique ID so you may need to be creative or accept something they
suggest.
After you have establisted an identity/registered, you will be able to post
-and- after you login, you will find that you are identified on the screen.
Plus you will find things like My Profile, My Favorites, My Notifications,
LogOut. These features are the real heart of the new system. They will
make registering and logging in worth the effort and inconvenience.
My Profile is where you can change your e-mail address when necessary. Or
you can change your password if there is some problem with the old one.
My Favorites is where you can store the links to any Message Board in the
system so you don't have to search for it again. When you first find a
Board you intend to visit again, there is a link toward the top to ADD that
Board to your favorites (like a bookmark). You can always later remove such
a bookmark as you need to, but the first thing most people will do when they
visit the Boards and log in is go to My Favorites to check their usual Boards.
My Notifications is where you list all the Boards to which you wish to
subscribe. The way this will work is that for ANY message posted to the
Boards to which you are susbcribed, there will be a notification sent to you
in e-mail. So far, this aspect is not working (I've posted a message but
not received notification), but when you are visiting a Board and want to
keep track of activity there in e-mail, you will find a link near the top to
ADD to My Notifications. This is also where you remove yourself from
notification if you later decided not to keep track in e-mail. Some boards
are gatewayed to appropriate lists and if you are also subscribed to the
list, you will not need to be notified.
LogOut is something you should get used to doing when you finish a session
with the Message Boards. It clears your browser's RAM of any special
identity cookies.
If you try the new Boards and have real rpoblems figuring things out, write
me privately at I am posting this much to try to keep
these lists from overloading with Board talk later as people have problems
with them. Our lists are about genealogy & history of the counties, not
Message Boards <grin>.....
