CROY, Matthias, born 1734 in France - died 1840 in Colerain Twp, Belmont
County, OH. He was a fine specimen of a man and anyone would be glad to
have him supplying genes in their gene pool; yes he lived to 105!
Family researchers say "He married a german girl from over the border
(Alsace Lorraine)."
He had several children in an approximate period of 1770 to 1777, we
know not where. In that later year he seems to have been in Uniontown,
Fayette, County, PA., where a daughter, Susannah, is born, March 16,
1777. (I suppose this is a church record or a family Bible)

As the War for Independence raged, Matthias seems to have pulled back
from the western frontier and researchers believe son, Jacob, was born
in Maryland in 1781. Pennsylvania Archives – Matthias Croy served in
Pennsylvania Militia in 1789.

In 1797 he signs a court document in Londonderry Township, Bedford
County. This document is in connection with the death of his probable
son-in-law Sebastian Horn. Matthias seems to be there to protect the
interest of Mary, his probable daughter.

He likely went to Fort Wheeling in about 1798, where his family lived
for about 5 or 10 years. At which time he moved them to Belmont County,
Ohio - where he lived out is life. However, first, he explored the
Muskingum river valley above Zanesville where he bought land in the
United States Military Tract.

This is part of a much larger story of Brethren, Horns and maybe some
Croys, moving from Bedford County, PA to early Ohio, probably as early
as 1798 - anyone interesed I will be glad to correspond. Hal
