I'm sending this to the list since I think it might be of help to us
all. Susan, I'm also not picking on you, just trying to help.
My roots are from Iowa but before that Noble Co. so I'm going to give a
few places to look. It would be nice if it were all on the net, but
looking at primary sources can't be beat.
I'm including Susan's original message so you can see where I get the
names and dates. OK you found a James in 1860, have you looked in Noble
1870 to see if he is married and about 27? and what his wife's name is?
Now check the 1880 census in Warren Co, IA and ck out this James and see
where he was born, what his wife's name was, where she was born, the age
of their oldest kid, etc. That will tell you a lot.
Now as to more information. Iowa had state census in the intermediate
years from the federal, they are available from FHC, they are in
Ft.Wayne, IN. Each one has different info on it. The 1885, and 1895 are
quite helpful since the 1890 census is gone.
Land records are also helpful, some even say formerly of so and so. The
best one is the 1925 state census, your Mary Lida may still have been
alive at that time. It lists the parents, maiden names if known, where
the parents were born and where they married-usually only state. Also
Mary Lida's death certicifate would help tell who her mother is.
Beyond this are obituaries, little snippets in the paper about brothers
and sisters, etc.
I hope I've been of some help to you,
