War letter from Jan 8 1919 Caldwell Press:

Letters From the Boys

Camp De Souge, France
Dec, 16, 1918

Dear Sister -- Will try and answer your welcome letter received today.
I have been getting a letter from you every week since I came to this
camp and I want you to know that I appreciate every one of them.

Willard MATHENY, the only boy in my company from Noble county, died last
night of pneumonia. He had only been sick one week. His funeral was
today -- he was buried in the Soldiers' cemetery at this Camp. He was a
good friend of all the men in our Company and we all regret very much to
lose him from our number. I know when his friends and relatives received
the sad news of his death they were heartbroken.

I do not think that we will get back to the U.S.A. by Xmas as we had
planned to. I for one am getting very anxious to get back home. We all
hope to get to come soon. We have a good place to stay here but it is
not like home. We have not been doing much work or drilling since the
armistice was signed.

I have run out of news so will close for this time. Am O.K. and trust my
letter finds you the same.

Your brother,
Charles E. McNUTT
Chief Mechanic Co. C Motor Battalion
309th Ammunition Train A.P.O.
