Possibly William Gray was incompacitated in some manner, physically or
mentally. The guardianship may have been formed by a professional or
lawyer, or even a relative, etc. The bond was a surety (form of insurance)
that could be sued if Noah Thomas was not forthright in his representation
of William Gray. William Gray may have had a lot of valuable positions that
needed to be consolidated to pay for his care etc.
