A good place to begin when looking for a place is the US Geological Survey, North American Geographical Name Server. The query form on this site will accept whatever information you have and list possible places that match. Of course it doesn't have many of the old names, but anything
that still appears on a Map will be there. The URL for that query form is:
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form
I ran a query for Briar Hill in Ohio and any variants. This is the list it provided.
Read: Feature Name, County, Feature Type, USGS 7.5' Map name
Briar Hill Lake, Cuyahoga, reservoir, Chagrin Falls
Briar Hill Corners, Geauga, populated place, South Russell
Brier College School (historical), Highland, school, New Market
Briar Hill Airport, Holmes, airport, Millersburg
Briar Hill Golf Course, Holmes, locale, Millersburg
Brier Hill, Mahoning, populated place, Youngstown
Briar Hill Golf Course, Wood, locale, North Baltimore
It looks like your best bet is the site near Youngstown. That area was booming at the time and many immigrants found work at the steel mills.
