Charles STALEY, husband of “Martha”
Charles appears to have been born: Abt. 1796/7 in Virginia.
The evidence:
The 1840 US Census for Lee Co., Iowa states
Charles STALEY between 40 – 50 years old, 1 male between 20 – 30;
1 female between 15 – 20;
1 female between 5 – 10
1 female (Martha) between 30 – 40.
According to the 1850 Lee Co., Iowa federal census Charles was 53 years old, a farmer, born in Virginia.
Charles STALEY a farmer, born in Virginia, his age was 59 and living in Iowa 16 years on the 1856 Lee Co., Iowa State Census.
He was 63 and born in Virginia on the 1860 Lee Co., Iowa Federal census.
He is not on the 1870 census. So, he must have died between 1860 and 1870.
We have the name of one daughter who was already married possibly by the time of the 1840 census. Her name was Eliza STALEY (1st husband STEDMAN) (2nd husband HARPER)
Charles had brothers: Daniel, born 28 Jul 1787, Jesse, born 8 Jun 1790, Silas, born 19 May 1792, John Fleming, born 13 Sep 1796, and Joel who was born 9 May 1802.
Another researcher gave this information: The STALEY family moved to Jefferson Co. Virginia [now West Virginia] in 1802, then to
Somerset Co. PA in 1818. Joel (brother of Charles) was married there in 1822 in Somerset Co., PA. and Ohio
I notice there is a Charles STALEY on the 1820 Census Harpers Ferry, Jefferson County, Virginia. But I have not been able to view it. Is there someone who will post this data on him in that census?
I would like to trace their migration from Virginia to Iowa and determine when and where Charles & Martha STALEY were married, how many children were born to them.
Any information and help would be greatly appreciated.
