One place to look, although not comprehensive is <http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/>;. It does list some historic places in all states.

Another site to search is <http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi>; at Rootsweb.

Both sites are free and can sometimes help narrow your search. Unfortunately, when there are multiple places with the same name it only increases the confusion!
