I am looking for information on the family of John (John George) THUM -
THUME -THUMM - THUMIN:

1870 OH CENSUS: Seneca County, 1st Ward, city of Tiffin p. 332 (recorded on
19Jul1870) - John was living in the same household (dwelling #348) as:
> Phillip YUNK age 28 (owner of the property), occupation: tanner, b France
of
foreign born parents
> Adeline age 23 keeping house
> Frederick age 3 b OH
> Cora age 2 b OH
> John THUM age 27, occupation: tanner - listed as citizen of US, b
Wurttemberg of foreign parents
> Christina age 25, wife
> Margaret age 3, b OH
> Lizzie age 1, b OH

This John THUM was listed in Lawrence Township, Tuscarawas County OH as John
THUME in 1860 Census, and the Allegheny city, Allegheny County PA census of
1880 as J. George THUMIN. I have been unable to find a marriage record for
his union with Christina (nee ?GALL), nor birth records for these two
daughters.

John George THUMM was born 9Sep1842 Scharnhausen, Wuerttemberg, emigrated
1854, married Luisa Christiana "Christine" <Gall> b 6Jul1845 Affalterbach,
Marbach District, Wurttemberg. Stark, Seneca and Tuscarawas County marriage
records do not include this marriage.

Is there an available record of births which might include the daughters
Margaret and Lizzie (listed as Elisabeth in 1880 census)?

Since Margaret is not included in the 1880 census, would there be a death or
burial record registry in Seneca County?

Born and baptized into the Lutheran Church in Germany, and confirmed in the
Lutheran Church in Stark County OH, I would imagine that he would have
remained in the church as did his siblings. Was there a German Lutheran
church in Tiffin circa 1870? Are there records available?

Would you have a theory as to why the eldest of four siblings, would alone
travel to Tiffin. His connection was evidently short-lived because the third
child was born in WV in 1872 when he joined up with his siblings and mother.
No other member of the family or any collateral relatives had any proven
connection to Seneca County. I am in search of missing STROBELs (relatives of
John THUMM's grandmother) who may have also moved to the area. Did there
exist an exceptional need for tanners in your region just after the Civil
War?

Any help would be appreciated. Name is correctly spelled THUMM.

Tom THUMM
