Most of us probably subscribe to a variety of lists in Digest mode. Some
lists are very active and large, frequent digests result. Most “location”
(i.e. county and state) lists are very active. Some “specialty” (i.e.
Brethren) lists are very active. The lists for Ohio counties in and near the
Miami Valley are all pretty active. Gatewayed messages from the ancestry.com
message boards are irritating for a number of reasons. They are part of
threads whose subjects may be understood by those involved, but are
meaningless on Rootsweb lists. Their presence tends to break up the
continuity of digests. On “surname” lists with little activity (i.e. the
Brumbaugh and Wildenhaus lists which I administer) this doesn’t matter much.
On very active lists it can be a serious detriment to the vitality of the
list. Two examples, to which I am sure many of the Stark folks also
subscribe, are the Brethren and Miller lists. Neither of these have
gatewayed messages. The Brethren list often comes out twice a day and is one
of the finest on Rootsweb. It even has three moderators. Gatewayed messages
would ruin it.

The content of message boards is generally not as good as that of Rootsweb
lists and tends to be directed to and by the few folks involved in a thread.
This is the purpose of the message boards. Browse them, find something
interesting and join the thread. Ancestry.com message boards and Rootsweb
lists were developed in totally different genealogical environments and for
different purposes. One must wonder why Rootsweb list messages are not
gatewayed to ancestry.com message boards. It’s obvious. It would make an
unbelievable mess.

The foregoing are some of the reasons that my vote is against gatewaying
messages to this list.
