Linda:
It is clear to me that our ancestors had a great deal of foresight but had
inaccurately calculated the moral fiber of the descendants to come.
The reason they got themselves buried away from their homelands is that they
had an independent demographic study done and determined that the Mound
Cemetery was the most likely place for a large shopping center developer to
want to build sometime in the mid 2000's. They thought that, just as with
Indian burial grounds, that descendants could make all kinds of claims of
sacred burial areas and the like and that Wallmart or Sears or Nordstrom
would pony up with huge amounts of cash for the exhumation and relocation of
the remains. Unfortunately, as with the Bebout Cemetery, when the time
comes, someone will just pluck up the stones, build as they see fit and make
a sidewalk of the marble and sandstone monuments. Nice try though---huh?
