CITY MAN KILLED, BOY INJURED IN TRUCK ACCIDENT
Joe David Barr, 41, of Anadarko was killed Wednesday and his stepson was
injured when Barr's motorcycle collided with a tractor-trailer rig that
turned into his path as the bike was eastbound on U.S. 62 east of Anadarko.
Barr's stepson, Austin Nation, 9, was the passenger on the bike. He suffered
a cut on his head and an injury to his knee. Nation was wearing a helmet.
The truck driver, Matthew Roughface, 44, of Anadarko, was not injured.
Anadarko Police Detective David Luttrell witnessed the accident. He was
eastbound several car-lengths behind Barr's Harley-Davidson motorcycle
at the time of the 6:57 p.m. accident.
Authorities said the truck was westbound and made a left turn from the
inside lane of the highway to turn south at the intersection.
Luttrell saw the truck turn and the motorcycle's brake light as Barr tried
to take evasive action. The motorcycle left more than 80 feet of skid marks
on the roadway.
Barr was thrown 15 feet from the point of impact and died instantly from
massive head and internal injuries.
His body shielded Nation from the impact, saving his stepson's life.
Luttrell said Nation was thrown to the left of the wreck, rolling him across
the highway. As he witnessed the accident, Luttrell called for help from
his car phone. Before Nation stopped rolling, Luttrell was out of his car
and running toward the boy.
He said Barr was not at fault in any way.
"He wasn't speeding, he didn't do anything wrong," Luttrell said about
Barr, who was a longtime friend. "He tried to avoid the wreck, but it happened
so fast".
Barr was employed at Western Farmers Electric Cooperative for 16 years
and had been a motorcycle enthusiast most of his life.
Barr was born April 25, 1956 and was a 1974 graduate of Anadarko High School.
He and the former Nancy Saathoff were married Feb. 16, 1993 in Texas.
Barr is survived by his wife and her sons, Austin and Brannon; his parents,
Joe and Margaret Barr of Anadarko; his sister, Marianne Shrum and her husband,
Terry, of Pryor; his nephew, Brett Shrum; his nieces, Brooke Shrum and
Brittany Shrum, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and his friends.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Memory Lane Cemetery with
the Rev. Ray Weathers of Anadarko officiating. Burial will be under the
direction of the Smith Funeral Chapel of Anadarko.
