Frank Miller was born to James K. Polk and Rachel Miller on February 18,
1884. He had three sisters: Martha, Grace, and Leah. He was born and grew
up at Mt. Erie, Illinois attending Farmer Grade School and Mr. Erie High
School. He worked for McIntire Horse Company until coming to Oklahoma.
He came to what is now the Cimarron County area(once No Man's Land)in the
spring of 1906. He arrived at Guymon, Oklahoma and hired a "locator" man
to help him find land that had not yet been filed on. When they left Guymon,
he found wide open prairie, mustang horses in bunches, occasional herds
of antelope, and about every six miles a ranch with big windmills. In the
fall of 1906, he moved onto his homestead; it was located one and a half
miles north and one and a half miles west of what is now Keyes, Oklahoma.
Frank met Rosetta Foster at Stratford, Texas, and they were married January
30, 1907. Rosetta's family were also early Cimarron County settlers. She
was the eldest of seven children born to Henry Washington and Melinda Foster
who had moved from Springfield, Illinois. Her sibblings were George, Oliver,
William, Charles, Bertha, and Sarah.
The Miller's first home was a dugout to which they later added on. They
built their family's home in 1929-1930 which was still standing in 1989.
Ten children were born to their union and grew up on the homestead: Maxwell
(November 18, 1907), Laura (October 20, 1909), LEAH JUNE (June 16, 1911),
Keith R. (November 2, 1913), Lora Jean (December 15, 1915), Kenneth (July
5, 1917), Mary Magdalene (May 31, 1921), Cecil Paul (April 29, 1924), Rosa
Mae (May 17, 1927), and Frankie Lee (August 4, 1930). Frank and Rosetta
had a part in establishing the Pioneer School and were early members of
the Methodist Church. Rosetta died in November of 1940. Frank remained
on the farm, and in 1941, he married Elsie Miles. He sold the homestead
to Joe Barrick in April of 1950 and moved to Cherryvale, Kansas. He died
November 8, 1958.
June married Fred Alderman on June 24, 1929. They lived in Keyes for a
while, moved to Cimarron, Kansas and later to Denver, Colorado. When Denver
began to grow, they decided to move to a smaller town, Pinedale, Wyoming.
June died January 24, 1975 and Fred died in 1986. Their children are Ernest,
Glen, Laverne, and Maxine.
This account was written by Rosa Miller Powers and can be found in "Footsteps:
Family Histories of Cimarron County, Oklahoma" edited by Norma Gene Butterbaugh
Young. More information about the Miller family (including June's brothers
and sisters) and Cimarron County history can be found in this book. I also
have the books "The Tracks We Followed", "Wheeless-Mexhoma: Memories of
the Past 1907-1987", and a historical edition of The Boise City News. I
will do look-ups. The first three books mentioned can probably be located
by contacting the Cimarron Heritage Center, and the newspaper can be found
at the newspaper office; both are in Boise City. Hope this helps. :o)
