Hi Everyone

Here is an e-mail concerning the new Query System. Read through the e-mail. It
sounds good and I think this is something that we need to do for Oklahoma. I
would like to ask for a volunteer to be Query Coordinator. Let me know if you
want this new responsibility.

Thanks
Ronda

Hi all... I have been swamped with email from so many of you and your CCs
wanting more info on the new KyGenWeb query system... when will it be
available for the other states and counties?... how do I get it?... will it
be available for other counties?... etc etc etc.

SO... here's the scoop... I'm beginning the process now of making it
available for anyone that wants to use it. It will probably be about 2
weeks before everyone will be up and running since I have 3000 county
directories to create and that takes time. I'll be setting them up on a
state by state basis, first come first serve. The FIRST thing I will need
will be a list of all the counties by state. Also, each state will have to
have a query administrator. This can be either the SC or someone you
assign, but I have to know their name and their email address before the
state can be activated.

Each CC will have a password assigned to them by the query administrator.
This pw is so they can go in and delete inappropriate queries. There are
also some other enhancements that we'll be adding later that the CCs will
be able to select, including whether or not they want to receive
pre-formatted queries for CCHELPER. We'll also be automating the system so
that all the surnames will be automatically submitted for you to Pattys CCH
Central, but that is coming up later, probably within a month or so. First
things first... we want to get all the states and counties on line that
want to use the system.

A couple of concerns that have been raised, I'll try to answer right now.
The rest I'll be answering on the sample board that we will set up so
everyone can play with it and find out exactly what is going on and learn
everything there is to learn about it. That board hopefully will be up by
tomorrow. As soon as it is up I'll announce the URL here.

This system is almost totally hands off for the CC... but not totally.
When someone posts a query to a board, it is posted immediately, and an
email notification of it being posted is sent to the CC. Here is what one
of them looks like:

Subject: New Hopkins Co. Ky Query Forum Post

A new message, "Re: DOBYNS, HANKS, FARMER, JONES, ODEN, SHORT, GATLIN,
LEWIS," was posted on the Hopkins Co. Ky Query Forum
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwqury/ky/hopkins/index.cgi>;
by Michael D. Lacopo on Sun, 18 Jan 1998, at 9:11 a.m. It is a response
to "Re: DOBYNS, HANKS, FARMER, JONES, ODEN, SHORT, GATLIN, LEWIS," posted
by Joanne Truman on Sun, 18 Jan 1998, at 8:23 a.m.

This is an automatically-generated notice. If you'd like to be removed
from the mailing list, please visit the Hopkins Co. Ky Query Forum at
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwqury/ky/hopkins/index.cgi>;,
or send your request to . If you wish to respond to this
message, please post your response directly to the board. Thank you!

The CCs are probably familiar with the names in their county and with the
names of many of the researchers. By looking at this email, I know that
this is a genuine query and I don't need to worry about Michael. I can
delete this email and move on... or if I did not recognize his name or his
surnames, I can click on the link and go check it out immediately. If it
is inappropriate for the county I can click on the email link to him, send
him an email telling him I'm deleting it and why and point him to the
unknown county page or the county or whatever, and then delete the message
in a matter of seconds. In this particular case it is a response to a
query posted by someone else.

If the CC wants to edit a query it can be done and I'll tell you how to do
that when the sample board goes up.

The one thing that we don't need to worry about with this system is spam.
No spammer is going to take the time to visit all the counties and post a
message... they want to do it all at one time with one email.

One thing that we might implement in the future if the need arizes is to
set up a filter where certain words will be filtered out of the queries if
they are on our "do not post" list. We'll look into that later... I don't
know if we can set up a filter to not accept messages posted from certain
domains or addresses. That is something that we'll look into later also if
the need arizes..

Take a look at the new Hopkins County board:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwqury/ky/hopkins/index.cgi

or take a look at Pams Mercer County board:
http://w3.one.net/~durp/queries/index.cgi

The Hopkins board just went online... Pams board has been up now for over a
month. For now she is going to leave it where it's at. Once we get the
other states set up she'll be moving it to the new usgwqury dir too. FWIW,
she says that she has only had to delete a couple of queries and that was
because they did not concern Mercer Co.

So... for now, that's it. I know you all have a lot of questions and I
guarantee that they will all be answered for you as soon as we get the
sample board set up. In the meantime I know there are a couple of states
that have already said they want it. I need a list of the state counties
from you before I can even start... and remember... FIRST COME FIRST SERVE!

Thanks,
nt
