Jacob's Update List - http://members.aol.com/nrainh20/index.html
Hi everybody:
It has been quite an eventful week. Jacob was started last week on tube
feedings instead of the IV feedings that he has been getting since
diagnosis. It is much better to use his gut than to give him nutrition
thru his IV. In the past, he has never gotten very far with this type
of
feedings. This time, however, he has done so well that he has now gone
for a week with all of his feedings thru his tube, and no IV nutrition.
We have even gotten to the point where he can get the majority of
nutrition at night, and thus less time during the day that we have to
chase him with a backpack. Unfortunately, he is still not wanting to
eat
much on his own. We have been to an occupational therapist who has
shown
us a behavioral program to re-teach him how to eat, but it is going to
be
a long haul. Essentially , teaching him to eat is like teaching a 6
month
old to eat for the first time, but with a 2 year old attitude!!
Jacob had his MRI scan yesterday, and the radiologist here said that he
did not see any signs of cancer in his bone marrow. If you remember, he
had a special scan done in NY that showed some pockets of cancer in his
hips and upper legs. If these were found on the MRI, we were going to
do
radiation. We are still awaiting the interpretation of the MRI from the
docs in NY, as they will have the other scan to compare it to. But for
now, we are thanking God for this TERRIFIC news. If all goes according
to
schedule, he will be going back next Monday (March 29th) for his second
round of antibodies. This time, Cheryl and her mother will get to
explore
New York City (at least between 73rd street and 67th street on 1st ave),
and Nick and
Mark will stay at home.
Jacob has been feeling so good we are getting out in this nice weather
to
play with the neighbor kids. He took a fall on Thursday and hasn't been
able to walk on his left leg since. But, fortunately, the X-rays didn't
show any fractures. So, hopefully he will be back to his active self
by
the end of next week.
Thank you all for your prayers, they are obviously working!!
Mark, Cheryl, Nicholas and
Jacob (stage 4 NB, dx 5/98 at age 16 mo)
