. They
had to make up new records on the say of the people. The county was in a
bind and did not like it. Ellen
If this wasn't so sad and pitiful, it would be so funny. Some of the county
clerks are often in a tiff and can see how they would really be in a bind.
Sure hope they were able to recover. How horrible! To the residents as well
as to researchers. For the most part, I have had only good responses in any
of the County Clerk's Offices I have visited. However, there are a COUPLE I
don't plan to visit again. We help them by remembering they are helping us
while they are trying to do their regular required jobs. We can help by
being respectful and being sure to put away all books as we found them,
making sure we leave the area as we found it, or better.
The horror of any researcher is to read "there was a fire, flood, etc. and
the records are gone". "If only" for the 1890 Census!
