Hello everybody. I will take a moment to respond to the entire mailing list
concerning "starters" in family history. I am a beginner myself, so I will
pass on what I have learned, and ask anyone elso out there to throw in your
two cents. First ask your living folks questions. Look through what data
you do have and begin with a www.rootsweb.com search on as many names as you
have. See what others have listed. Then visit the websites for the
individual counties for know cities of residence. Leave your surname there
are a researcher, also place a query there stating exactly what you know,
and what you want. If the county website has a lookup volunteer, email them
a request specifically. Join a mailing list at rootsweb specific to the
county or surname you are researching. Place statements on the mailing list
routinly stating who you are and what you know and what data you need. Go
to libraries, historical societies, and genealogical societies for help.
Another writer to this list said to FOLLOW THE LAND, to track property
deeds, transactions, taxes, etc. Think of everywhere that a record would be
kept. City directories, yearbooks, churches, the list is long. Do a search
at www.google.com At that site type in name location date whatever and
click search, play around with the words used to search with and see what
happens. Keep good notes and just keep plodding along. I hope this helped
someone out there.
Lillian Kathleen Martin, Looking for Nellie Keller/Hopkins/Davis in Duncan ,
OK 1909-1973.

> What a great service you did by writing some simple advice to the person
asking for "starters" help. I too wrote to her directly with lots of
advice. But your advice was different than mine, and as much as I thought I
knew, you taught me more. I proves that you CAN teach an old dog new
tricks.
