- The Dynamic Family Tree (International)
Michael Horey has created an interesting new tool that displays
fully graphical, interactive family tree information in a Web
browser. The information displayed could be stored on a personal
home page, or it could reside on a hard drive or on a CD-ROM disk.
It is an excellent tool for displaying family tree information.
The Dynamic Family Tree is implemented as a Java Applet. It should
work on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux systems. As such, it can
provide an excellent tool for distributing information to others
where you do not know which operating system the recipients will
be using.
To build a family tree with this tool, you first create a GEDCOM
file using any modern genealogy program. You can then exit your
genealogy program and run The Dynamic Family Tree. This program
will read the GEDCOM file and then process it according to options
specified by the user. The result is a new HTML file that can then
be copied to a Web site or to a CD-ROM. A small Java Applet
included with The Dynamic Family Tree also must be copied to the
same location. The data can then be read by using any modern Web
browser. The person who reads the data probably will never know
that a Java Applet is in use.
The Dynamic Family Tree gives very fast response to user actions.
When you click on a person's name in a pedigree chart, a new chart
is displayed almost instantly. Each chart shows children, spouse,
and four generations of ancestors of the individual at the tree
focus. Individuals are color coded according to their relationship
to the tree owner. The program also displays details when you
position the mouse pointer over an individual.
The Dynamic Family Tree (International) certainly lives up to the
word "international" in its title: the program is available in 18
different languages, ranging from English to French, German,
Spanish, Polish, Slovak, Turkish, Finnish and ten other languages.
You can view examples of a pedigree chart displayed in the Dynamic
Family Tree at the author's Web site. You can also download this
free program from the same site at: http://www.dftcom2.co.uk/
My thanks to Torleif Haugødegård in Norway for telling me about
The Dynamic Family Tree (International).
