Marti, the photos are of two different Steam Operated Cotton gins.
The exterior of the one on the (viewers) right has hard wood siding - the
one on the left has "shiplap" siding, probably cottonwood which was an
inferior tree for lumber!!
I suspect the McCloud location is correct. Each of the photos were taken in
probably Sept or Oct of the year - while kids were out of school for
harvest.
I visited McCloud several times in the mid 1940s, in the company of one of
my Wayne HS buddies (Garland Hunt) who had family living in the NW outskirts
of town. I do not recognize specifically those particular establishments.
Yes, those are bales of cotton - makes my back hurt just looking at them and
it has been most 60 years since I touched a cotton boll - deliver me from
ever experiencing that "stoop labor" ever again.
Good photos - thanks for putting them on.. Someone will recognize them I
bet.
