I have read with interest all the thoughts and memories of Cavanal Hill... I
live in Pocola, 20 miles north of there, and on a clear day you can see
Cavanal from my yard...
Another thought, for those interested... there is a book titled "A Journey
of Travels into the Arkansas Territiory in 1819", written by Thomas Nuttall (I
am sure it can be ordered through any book store)...
Apparently Nuttall was travelling on behalf of the government to inspect the
Louisiana Purchase, this book is his findings... there is a plate picture of
Cavanl Hill, done by Nuttall, in 1821... Plus detailed information on the
flora, fauna, rock structures, etc...
Cavanal still looks the same... I remember my daughter, who was about 10 at
the time I got this book, recognized Cavanal from this plate. She said it was
easy, it looks like an elephant's trunk:)
