In my Love County book there is some info about Oswalt. "Oswalt: In northern
Love County, 14 miles northwest of Marietta. A post office from July 13,
1898 to May 31, 1949. Named for William Oswalt, early-day resident."
And in another article "The first train through Marietta was a very great
event. People from all around came to see it. Many came several days ahead
of time and camped out. Wagons were camped everywhere while they waited
for the train. Their camp fires lit up the whole countryside at night.
Mrs. Powell tells about Mr. Billie Oswalt. He was camped east of town and
had some fresh meat in his wagon. That night hungry wolves came and tried
to get into his wagon. Mr. Oswalt sat up all night with a singletree in
his hand ready for a fight. The wolves stayed around all night just outside
the firelight."
There is a little more info regarding the naming of Oswalt. Mr. Oswalt's
name was submitted with 2 others by a Mr. Chambers. Mr. Oswalt's name was
chosen to name the post office/community after.
On the Overstreet family of James, do you know if he by any chance had
a son named James/Jim? There was an uncle Jim in our Overstreet family.
He may have had twin daughters. We have pictures. There is also an Overstreet
Reunion in Llano, TX every year. We have never made our connection with
that family but we had some pictures in common.
