Graveside services for W.F. Griggs, 81, of Cushing, were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 17, in the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta. Military Honor Guard and Chaplain from Fort Sill performed military rites.

Mr. Griggs was born May 17, 1921, in Marietta, the son of K.C. and Eunice McMeans Griggs. He died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in Cushing.

He graduated from Marietta High School in 1939. He and Cleo
Mae Duncan Monday were married in Marietta. Mr. Griggs joined the U.S. Army on July 6, 1942, training as a glider pilot
at Randolph Field, Texas, until transferring to the 90th Troop Carrier Squadron, 438th TC Group, with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served in Europe and was piloting a glider, which crashed in Normandy on D-Day, 1944. Mr. Griggs was the recipient of a Purple Heart, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, seven Bronze Stars and a Bronze Arrow Head. He was discharged on November 9, 1945.

Mr. Griggs served as an Oklahoma Highway Patrol Officer for several years in the Chandler/Stroud area. He then began driving trucks, later joining Elsworth Trucking Company of Stroud, becoming their Sales Manager prior to the company being bought by Chemical Express, where Mr. Griggs worked
his way up to Vice President/General Manager of a five state
area. He retired from Chemical Express in 1999, and began driving trucks again.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Chuck
Murdock of Tulsa; two grandchildren, Scott Spence and Diana
McGee; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Griggs was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Cleo; a son, Terry Griggs; and a daughter, Phyllis.

Services were under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service, Stroud.
