Graveside services for William G. "Dub" Davis, Jr. were Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in Lakeview Cemetery with Father John G. Twyman officiating.
Mr. Davis was born September 30, 1914, in Marietta and died July 8, 1991, in the Gainesville Memorial Hospital, Gainesville, Texas, at the age of 76. He was the son of William G. and Hazel Mathews Davis.
A graduate of Marietta High School, Mr. Davis attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity, several honorary scholastic fraternities and societies, and the Mens Council of the University. Following graduation in 1936, he was recruited by General Electric Company for its Business Training Course in Schenectady, New York. After completing post-graduate studies, he was offered and accepted employment with TIME Incorporated, which at that time published "Time,"
"Life," "Fortune," and "Architectural Forum" in New York.
In 1941 he was called to duty as an Army Reserve Officer, obtaining the rank of Major. He was assigned to the office of Chief of Ordnance at the nearly completed Pentagon.
Mr. Davis and Marjorie Thaden were married July 10, 1943, at the First Presbyterian Church of New York City. After being released from active duty in 1945, he returned to TIME Inc. and established a home in Chappaqua, New York. While working for TIME he became the financial officer of the parent company and administrator of the TIME employees profit sharing and retirement plan. He also served as an officer and director of a number of subsidiary and affiliated companies.
After retiring in 1969, Mr. and Mrs. Davis have made Gainesville their primary home. He was a member of the Mahota Memorial Presbyterian Church in Marietta and also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Davis had also been active in the affairs of the Lowry-Avery Clan whose members are descendants of his maternal grandmother and convene 200 strong every five years for a two-day reunion in York, South Carolina.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marjorie Davis of the home in Gainesville; three daughters, Suzanna Davis of New York, New York, Linda Nexon of Mt. Holly, Vermont, and Ann Wheeler of Darien, Connecticut; a sister, Mary Sue Leonard of Gainesville; and four grandchildren, Mark Nexon, Kate Nexon, Marshall Wheeler, and Graham Wheeler.
Services were under the direction of the Anderson-Kennedy Funeral Home.
