Marietta, June 22, 1918-- PRIVATE SIDNEY STARRETT, who has been home on a furlough from Camp Travis, returned to San Antonio.
O. T. GARDNER of St. Louis who has been visiting his uncles, DRS. R. A. and B. S GARDNER, returned home.
R. L. MAYFIELD left for Mussel Shoals near Nashville, Tennessee, to do work on the government ‘s munitions plant.
MRS. GAINS MITCHELL, formerly MISS MARIE ROBINSON, received a telegram yesterday telling of the serious illness, pneumonia, of her husband at Camp Riley, Kansas.
J. H. SULLIVAN of San Antonio arrived yesterday on business. He was former owner and manager of the Farmers Restaurant here. At present he is running a restaurant on Main Plaza in San Antonio.
ERNEST COTHRAN and GUY GARDNER went to Ardmore yesterday to enlist with the workers who are to be sent to Mussel Shoal in Tennessee.
JAMES STAFFORD was in Ardmore on business.
MISS MARIE KENDALL of Gainesville returned home after visiting at the homes of MISS VIRGIE NEWTON and MISS GERALDINE BURNEY, the latter accompanying her home where she will visit for a week.
ED DEAN has completed a garage for WILLIS CHOATE to house his latest hobby, a five passenger Overland car.
MRS. ANGLIN is having a new porch built on her bungalow and other improvements to the interior.
The Marietta cotton gin is being re-covered with corrugated galvanized sheet iron and new openings are being put in replacing the old windows and doors, also a seed shed that is being built by DAVE CHILDERS.
At the Round Bale gin, a new seed house to replace the one burned last year is being built by PAUL BAILEY, and other improvements in the gin proper.
The council of defense is after all who are not doing their bit and their efforts are showing in the few idlers to be seen in our city. The slogan ‘work or fight’ being practically in effect here.
The local exemption board sent four Negroes yesterday.
JOHN WILLIAMS of Nocona, Texas is visiting friends in Marietta this week.
MRS. JOHN JUSTIN and little son of Nocona, Texas are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. CHOATE and family.
CONWAY, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. FRANK SELVIDGE, who is in the Gainesville sanitarium, is in a critical condition and her recovery is doubtful.
‘BABE’ SHIPMAN, of Bakers Company No. 375, Quartermaster’s Corps, Camp Travis, is home on a furlough and visiting his brother, PAT SHIPMAN, and uncle LEM SHIPMAN.
Drowned in Red River
ETHEL, the 18 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. JOHNSON, who live south of Thackerville, was drowned last night while helping here 16 year old brother set out a trot line in Red River. The water was about 3 feet deep. She was holding the line when she lost her balance and stepped in a whirlpool and was sucked under the water. Her body was found 3 hours later about 30 feet below. The burial will take place at Mt. Zion cemetery in Thackerville.

Marietta, May 25, 1918-- MISS DOVIE MATHEWS, a trained nurse in the Gainesville sanitarium, spent last week in Marietta, the guest of her sister, MRS. C. E. JOHNSON and family.
LEONARD DAVENPORT, salesman at S. WESTHEIMERS’s Dry Goods Co., is spending a week vacation with relatives at Kaufman, Texas.
MISS MILDRED MARTIN of Ardmore, who has been visiting her grandparents at Bomar, returned home.
MISS BESSIE LADD, who is attending the state normal at Durant, spent the weekend with her parents east of Marietta.
J. S. DANIELS, advertising manager of The Daily Ardmoreite, was in Marietta in the interest of the Ardmoreite.
MISS LUCILE CANNON and MRS. H. H. BENNETT and EVYLIN left yesterday for Colbert to visit relatives.
MRS. THOMAS CULWELL and baby of Burneyville passed through on their way to Norman where she joined here husband who is taking a post graduate course in pharmacy.
Mr. and Mrs. S. A. PARKER of Springtown, Texas are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. DAVID SELVIDGE and family.
REV. HEISLER of Ardmore passed through Marietta and was joined here by his mother, MRS. L. B. BUTLER, and brother, L. B. Jr. on their way to Gainesville to be present with L. B. BUTERL was operated on at the Gainesville sanitarium.
Mr. and Mrs. THOMAS O. KELLY took their five year old son to the Ardmore sanitarium for an operation. The child died and was brought back to Marietta last night. E. F. CLAYONT went to Ardmore and brought the remains back to Marietta, arriving here 3:00 Sunday morning. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. F. CLAYTON. REV. J. M. JONES conducted the service with interment at Lake View cemetery.
FRANK SELVIDGE and three children, MARTHA, WADE and FRANK JR., spent Sunday in Gainesville where MRS. SELVIDGE is at the bedside of their daughter, CONWAY, who is in serious condition.
MRS. E. P. KERR and MRS. OSCAR NORVELL were business visitors at Ardmore yesterday.
MISS MARY NEAL, who has been spending her vacation at Fort Worth, returned home where she will resume her position as long distance operator at the telephone office.
MISS ELOISE ROSE returned home after visiting her sister, MRS. FRANK ADAMS and family at Ringling.
AMIEL FROZART returned to Camp Bowie after visiting relatives in Marietta.

MRS. F. L. HICKS and children of Britton, Oklahoma are visiting relatives at Marietta.
FRANK MILLER of the Navy, stationed at New York, is home on furlough. Mr. Miller was on the steamer WILLIAM ROCKEFELLER when she was torpedoed by a U-boat.
S. WESTHEIMER, county chairman of the War Savings Stamp Service, held a called meeting of the his various committeemen of the county to make arrangements for the national War Savings Day, June 28.
The Grandi Stock Company and Calkins Women’s Orchestra opened a week’s engagement under a tent, west of the Marietta Hotel last night. The opening play was ‘Circumstantial Evidence.’
F. B. CONRAD and S. WESTHEIMER were business visitors in Ardmore.

Marietta, June 28-- MRS. JOSEPH W. BURNEY of Burneyville passed through Marietta yesterday en route to Oklahoma City to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. BLACKBURN.
FRANK MILLER, who is in the Navy, returned to New York today.
MRS. WILLIAM MCNALLY of Lebanon passed through yesterday on her way to Arizona to make her home with her parents. Her husband, who had been in training at Camp Travis, is in France.
CALVIN STEWART of Enville was in Marietta yesterday.
MISS FAY GREEN of the telephone office and MISS ARLIE MCCARLEY left yesterday to visit at New Wilson, Healdton and Ardmore.
OLLIN RHOADS of Enville was here yesterday.
HARVEY GRISHAM has accepted a position as bookkeeper for the Pauls valley Milling Company at Pauls Valley and will move his family there in a few days.
T. L. ROSE, plant chief of the telephone office, was in Burneyville on tool line trouble.
All Marietta stores will close today after 12:00 to enable employees and merchants to pledge and buy war savings stamps. Every rural school district will be covered by speakers assigned by S. WESTHEIMER and his committees.
MISS CORA BLACK went to Gainesville yesterday to attend the ELRODA-CHAFFIN wedding.
JACK MITCHELL of Dallas who has been visiting his sister, MRS. G. K. WASHINGTON, north of Marietta, returned home. He has since enlisted in the infantry and was sent to Camp Travis.
Marietta Monitor: J. S. DANIELS, advertising man of the Ardmoreite, was here in the interest of his paper. The Ardmoreite has been become one of the most sought after dailies coming to Marietta. It arrives at 5:17 in the evening and from it, Marietta people procure later water news than from any other paper. … MRS. MATTYE ROSE, also makes the paper popular in Marietta…
F. C. BELL and F. M. CULWELL have formed a partnership and will conduct a real estate business. Their office is located at F. M. CULWELL’s insurance office.
The best yield of oats this year was raised by BUSTER TYLER in Loves Valley. His oat crop was threshed last week and he had 3 acres of oats that averaged 108 bushels per acre.

Orr branch has made 172 hospital shirts, 24 bed shirts, 6 pairs of socks, 20 garments for Belgian relief besides a box valued at $15 for relief fund.
The Home Guards were issued regulation army hats Tuesday at the drill hour and are now all togged in army style.
