Hello Alma,
I just got back from Oklahoma and I couldn't wait to tell you what I found.
Here it is.
DAILY ARDMORETT
ARDMORE, OKLAHOMA
November 4, 1905
J. P. Brewer Given Preliminary Hearing
One of the most revolting cases that has come before the authorities for a
long time was a case where the defendant is charged with incest, and the
preliminary hearing held yesterday before Commissioner Robnett.
The defendant was J. P. Brewer, and the victim his 18 year-old daughter,
Docia May Brewer. The testimony was to the effect that the unlawful
relationship had been sustained for more than four years, and the six
months-old baby, carried by the mother, who is the prosecuting witness in
the case, is the result of the crime.
Commissioner Robnett held the defendant to await the action of the United
States grand jury at Purcell, and fixed the amount of his bond at
two-thousand dollars, which he was unable to give.
The parties in the affair came to the Indian Territory a few months ago
from Asher, Oklahoma, and it is said that they left that place in order to
avoid the authorities at the place. It was an extremely dirty affair all
through.
How about that. I have finally proved what we have all heard is true. Read
this article good and lets decided how we can find more. After reading this
article from the newspaper in Ardmore I changed my mind about the places I
was going to see. I went dirrectly to Purcell. I love that place. People
were so nice so different from this Metroplex we live in. That seems to be
the way little towns are.
As we were waiting for the Purcell courthouse to open a elderly man was
walking for his morning exercise. Thomas asked him when the courthouse
opened and he gave us so very much information. He told us where the
Library was and what can of information it had. Then he told us to go see
an old red brick building on the hill just before going down a very steep
road to the railroad station. He said this building used to be the United
States Indian Chickasaw Southern District building. If Perry was brought to
this town, I would bet that it was the one that he had to appear in.
The Newspaper article stated that the case would await the action of the
United States grand jury. We didn't get to look at the old newspapers while
we were there. We really didn't know when to look for an article on the
case anyway. We did see some court records at the library that were before
1907 and statehood. Most of these probably could have been found in Fort
Worth but, I didn't know what to look for there. I will go to Fort Worth
again and see what else I can find.
You can see that I am "pumped". I made the trip ok. Thomas helped me
lots. I am not sure what is wrong with me but I have not been feeling well.
I am just not happy that I can't act and feel like a "spring chicken". Have
you ever heard that one before. If you haven't I have lots more where that
came from.
I hope you are glad to receive this information as I was.
Lenora
