Since McCurtain County seems to be fired up, I'm hoping someone can help
me. I am trying to find birth records from 1918 for my father. He has
never known his full birth name since his parents died when he was young.
The 1820 census shows him as Billy. He has always thought his real name
was probably William, but he has a brother named Luther William. I doubt
there would be two Williams in the same immediate family. When Daddy
entered the service in WWII, he could not find a birth certificate, so he
had one made showing William Griffin. It was my understanding that the
old birth records were destroyed in a courthouse fire. Recently, I was
browsing the McCurtain Co website on rootsweb, and noticed that birth and
death records are available from 1908. Can someone tell me if there are
old records still in McCurtain County. I'm sure the Dept of Vital
Statistics is only going to have the birth certificate daddy made for
himself. He is nearly 81 years old, and I would like to find his name for
him while he is alive to appreciate it. If anyone has any ideas, I would
love to hear them. Daddy was born in Idabel, but grew up in Battiest.
(I'm also interested in death records from 1928 for my grandfather - where
can those be found?)
