He may have been like the Taylors in my line and the Rays in my husbands
line. Back then many did not want to be added to any list, for various
reasons. In my line, the grandfather said that getting that land was charity
and he refused to sign up...in my husbands line the mother did not want
anyone to know she was Indian and didn't sign up. So ... although I have
pictures of my ancesters standing there in full Indian regalia...I cannot
actually 'prove' they were Indian. They won't accept the pictures, because
they could be pictures of anyone :(

Also, in my mother's line the Cooks from Tennessee were part of the Eastern
Band, owned their own land outright and thus were never 'moved' to Oklahoma
with the rest of the Cherokees. No proving record of their being Indian
there either....as a matter of fact, the daughter was even recorded as
'white' even though she was indian. That's because the choices on the
census was 'white, mulatto, or colored'...so they picked white, since they
were not either of the other.

This is all VERY frustrating...huh?
