Thanks for your response Shelley. The Lillian Howell you made reference to on the 1900 census is the correct one. Lillian Howell married Benjamin Green McCleskey. Lillian and Benjamin are on the 1910 Okmulgee Census together, (as well as 1920 and 1930) along with children. Of course if she died at 16, then she would have been a Howell. The mystery comes in that "both" Lillian's have the same date of birth and the same parents!
Lillian's obituary appeared in the Okmulgee Daily Times Friday April 5, 1974 page 3 and read as follows:
Lillian McCleskey
Funeral services for Mrs. Lillian McCleskey 90 former long-time Okmulgee resident who died Wednesday in Chouteau Nursing Home following a lengthy illness will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel for the Buchanan Funeral Home. The Rev. Mark Johns, pastor of the First Baptist Church will be the officiant and internment will be in the Okmulgee Cemetery under the direction of the Buchanan Funeral Home.
Mrs. McCleskey was born June 13, 1883 in Collin County, Texas and moved to Oklahoma Indian Territory in the 1890's. She was married to Benjamin G. McCleskey in 1902. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1932.
Survivors include two sons, Floyd E. McCleskey, Chouteau and Williard McCleskey, Caldwell, Idaho, one sister Mrs. Mae McGuffin, Spokane Washington, 5 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
I have a scanned copy of a Howell Family bible that confirms this information. She appears on SS Death Index as Lillian McCleskey and it also gives her date of birth 13 June 1883 and date of death as Apr 1974.
Lillian is also mentioned in her brother, Edgar Howell's obituary:
Funeral service for Ed Howell, 76 who died
Tuesday will be conducted
today at 2:30 p.m. from Calvary Baptist church, 13th
and Belmont.
The Rev. C.D. Schmidt, pastor will officiate.
Burial will be in Cusseta cemetery under
direction of Buchanan funeral
home.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Lona Howell of
the home address, 1204
North Oklahoma; 11 daughters, Mrs. Thomas Robnett,
420 South Delaware, Mrs.
H.W. Garner, Okmulgee, Mrs. O.L. Luttrell, 1011 West
Eufaula, Mrs. O. W.
Watson, Mrs. John Stanfield, and Mrs. E.R.
Bortisser, all of Benecia,
Calif., Mrs. Bob Lee, Carthage, Mo., Mrs. Dexter
Holleyman, Cushing, Mrs. E.
A. Ragsdale, Tulsa, Mrs. John Ballard, Wichita, Ka.,
and Mrs. Laveine Smith,
Cedarvale, Kan.
Also four sons, E.E. Howell, 409 east Eight,
L.E. Howell, 210 South
Porter, H.W. Howell, Okmulgee, and Joe Hossier,
Little Rock, Ark., three
sisters, Mrs. Lillian McCleskey, 610 North Bryan,
Mrs. Kate thompson, Tulsa,
and Mrs. Perry McGuffin, Seattle, Wash., one brother
W.J. Howell, Seminole,
39 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
I also have a "Okmulgee Cemetery Record Card", which I copied from microfilm which lists Lilian McCleskey Lot #143 Section C space 2, date of birth June 13, 1883 age 90. Date of Death Apr. 3, 1974.
I am just trying to figure out why there is a headstone that says she died at age 16 (same birthdate and same parents), and this headstone is next to her sister. It is very confusing to me and I am just looking for anyone that might have any ideas or may be researching this same family. I hope that I haven't just added to the confusion with the information that I have posted.
thanks again,
Michelle
