The funeral home in Picher is not very helpful. I stopped in and spent
an hour with them one day. They do not like genealogists at all! The
feeling is that there were a lot of things going on around there that
they do not want anyone digging into. I have even been told how when
some of the women were "in the family way" they would pick one of the
men that had recently died in the mines and named him as the father. It
was a rough mining town with lots of fighting, drinking, and "loose"
women. There were also lots of men who worked in the mines and had to
raise families in the area. The saying is "they worked hard, fought
harder, and played the hardest".
Good luck,
Cyndi
