Hello Bob,

1. 'of Newenham esq and of Lincoln Hospital councillor at law. Living 1618'

2. 'aged 30 years in the year 1618'

3. 'aged 4 years in the year 1618' and (added in French) 'dead without issue'

1618 is mentioned several times either because the pedigree was drawn up in that year or because it was necessary to know who was living in that year, and how old they were (this might be important for determining matters of inheritance - for example if someone had died in that year and it was necessary to know who his heirs would have been).

The two Henries can't have been the same person because they were of different ages in 1618.

NB The two Henries' ages are indicated by 'aet', an abbreviated form of 'aetatis'. Strictly speaking this means not 'aged' but 'in the year' (ie 'in the 30th year' rather than 'aged 30 years'). If someone is in his 30th or 4th year then he is actually aged only 29 or 3. However the proper usage is 'aetatis suae x', meaning 'in his xth year'. Since that form of words isn't used here I suspect the author is using aetatis wrongly, so that 'aetatis 30 annorum' means just 'aged 30 years'

I have placed on my webpage http://webpages.charter.net/bob2626/ an extract
from an old Northamptonshire document. The file is the only one currently on
my page.

1.I need a translation from Latin of the text under "Thomas Thornton"
at the upper left of the extract.
2.Ditto for the text under "Henricus" under "Willimus Thornton 2
filius" at the right.
3.Ditto for the text under "Henricus Thornton filus primogenitus." at
the bottom.



This may become clear after the translation, but I don't currently
understand why "1618" appears in all three places and also want to know if
the "Henricus" of 2. above and the one of 3. are the same person.
