Hi Henry,
I have run across several records pertaining to your Hankins family while
researching our NATION, SHARP, and LOVE families. Probably you have these but
will copy a few anyway:
Thomas Branson of Orange Co. to Thomas HENKINS of same - 359 acres on branch
of Sharrando River called Crooked Run - granted 3 Oct. 1734 to Thomas
Branson. Proved by Joist Hite and Thomas Chester..
Note: Thomas HANKINS was married to Mary Clevenger 1728 in Monmouth Co. NJ
Mary HANKINS Bond Administration: Widow of Thomas HANKINS dated 5 April
1748. Mary HANKINS, Peter Woolf, and John NATION bound.
WILL of Wm. HANKINS dated 25 Feb. 1782, proven 4 June 1782 Frederick Co. VA.
Names sons Richard, Abel, Moses, William (eldest), Asa, and Amases. Wife
Jane. Witness: Abraham Cleavinger & John SHARP
Jane HANKINS was apparently the sister of two of our ancestors per 1762
Frederick Co. Will of Thomas SHARP. Names daughters Rebecca Churchman,
Elizabeth NATION, Sarah LOVE, Ann Haines, Jane HANKINS, Mary Ramey, and Mary
Frazier. Son Thomas SHARP JR, Witness: Robert Haines, Peter Woolf, William
HANKINS
31 Oct. 1771 Richard and Deborah HANKINS sell to Robert Hains 181 acres on
Crooked Run .
Oct. 1789 Joseph and Ann HANKINS to Thomas Churchman
27 July 1780 William and Jane HANKINS to John SHARP 146 acres being part of a
tract of 359 acres .
6 April 1801 Asa and Ann HANKINS sell to Asa Clevenger part of tract devised
by Wm. HANKINS to sons Asa, Abel, and Amos.
There is a map in the book "The Fairfax Proprietory" which shows the the lots
sold along Crooked Run by Thomas Lord Fairfax. The majority of Crooked Run
appears to still be in Frederick Co. but very close to the border of Clarke
Co. Asa HANKINS is shown owning lot # 36. John NATION owned lots # 38 and 39.
which bordered Lord Fairfax's Greenway Court.
We live in Dallas but visited Frederick Co. VA last spring and attempted to
locate John NATION's land and spring. If you travel north from Front Royal on
highway 340 you will be paralleling Crooked Run on your left . If you proceed
to Double Toll Gate and turn left on #277 then right on #636 for about a mile
you will be within a stones throw of Asa Hankins land. Thomas Lord Fairfax's
Court is a few miles south of White Post (a couple of miles east of Double
Toll Gate). Although I am sure it is not the original, a large white sign
post still stands in the middle of the highway which directed travelers to
Lord Fairfax's land.
Should you get up to that area, I would heartily recommend a trip to the
Warren Heritage Society in Front Royal. We stayed at a Bed & Breakfast almost
next door to their archives. Anne Beverly Kerr is the archivist and she lives
in the White Post area. She directed us right to NATION's Spring Road. She is
super helpful.
Sorry that I could not help with the location of a grave but since almost all
of these early settlers were Quakers from NJ, I would bet they are buried at
the old Crooked Run Meeting House.
Good luck, Ted
