Greetings Kathy and List members!
I have been researching the Durham STACEY family(ies) for the past couple of
years and am generally interested in anyone from any of STAC(E)Y families
who are or who have ancestors who lived in Durham County in before 1900.
Specifically, I have a growing treasure of information about the family of
John STACEY (c1840-1890) and Emma Jane NEWBERRY (1846-1896), who emigrated
with three (of their future twelve) children, around May 1871 (or 1872) from
Devonshire, England. On June 11, 1888, they purchased 7 acres of land from
John SHIPMAN the Elder, a central-north portion of Lot 33 Concession 2 (just
west of the village of Courtice) in Darlington Township.
Apparently John and Emma moved to Courtice because John STACEY's sister
Grace STACEY (c1837-1892)had moved there a year or two earlier and was
married to Thomas VEAL(E) (c1833-1897). On the 1871 census the VEALE's were
tenants on a small portion of Lot 27 Concession 2 (just east of Courtice).
It is not impossible that other STACEY siblings (or cousins) moved from
Devonshire and settled in or near the Courtice area before or after 1871. I
believe our STACEY family comes from Merton, (north) Devonshire, England,
but arrived in Canada via Torquay, (south coast) Devonshire. Emma Jane
NEWBERRY came from the village of Marystow in western Devonshire (near
Lifton and the Cornish border).
Specifically, my own specific focus now is to find information from the
local land registry office. I haven't done this before and am not entirely
sure where to go or what to do. Any advice or suggestions?
Regards,
Astrid Terras
