Hi Penny...

I just noticed that you were wondering about 1851 census returns for Cavan.
Cavan was part of the Newcastle District til the districts were abolished in
favour of the present county system around 1850 or so.

There are the following:

Cavan NEWCASTLE DISTRICT
1819-1823 (microfilm call #M-7737)
1825-1848 (microfilm call #M-7737)
1850 (microfilm call #M-7737)

These are available through the Inter-Library loan program from the Archives
of Ontario. If you live in Ontario, your library will order these (& all
Ontario) census rolls. Just expect a bit of a wait. I've ordered some that
took two months to get to my library. Others were there in a couple of
weeks. Also, the Canadian Archives offers the same service for all canadian
census rolls.

An excellent guide (a copy of which I own) is:

CENSUS RETURNS/RECENSEMENTS 1666-1891
published by the Public Archives of Canada.

This gives a list of all enumeration districts in Canada, by microfilm call
number, for most of the Canadian censuses & some regional censuses. There
are some censuses that just covered small areas that are not listed. There
is usually a well thumbed edition is all libraries.

Also, there is a 1901 edition (which I don't own).

Regards,

Chris Bradshaw
