Some info on Greene County and some questions too:
Cary O'Neall has suddenly become really interesting to me, his father,
John,
was my ancestor Henry F. O'Neall's brother. John went to Indiana first,
from SC,
it appears and Henry followed by 1830. Cary is my 1st cousin 5 times
removed, according to my kinship report. All of Cary's descendants are
interesting
to me now too! I would love to add as much info about them to my database
as
possible.
Next!
Some interesting things from Judy Jefferson !!!!!: thanks Judy!
From the History of Greene and Sullivan County, State of Indiana, 1884,
Goodspeed.
Monroe Co. Library, Bloomington, IN
p. 50- In 1819 John O'Neall is listed as making a land entry in Greene Co.
Ind. That is
Cary's father. He is also listed as being on the first grand jury in 1821.

p 112-My great great grandfather was J.H.B. O'Neall (John H.B.) he is
listed in the same book
as being a deputy sherriff of Sherriff Bynum,
in 1876 in Greene County (does anyone know if any records
exist from this era, of deputy's?, does Greene Co. have an archives?)

p. 279-Under old-time preachers it says: "John O'Neal (Cary's father I
presume) was a Quaker and preached many of the early sermons in the
township. He was a man of strong personal magnetism and possessed a rude
eloquence which found its way to the hearts of hundreds of his neighbors."

p 279- "Henry F. was the father of William and John F. and came from S C
and settled on the Skomp place......" Anyone know what the Skomp place
is/was?

".....then moved to Daviess Co. His children and grandchildren have been
among the most respected citizens in all that locality. John F. O'Neal
became a leading politician of Greene Co. serving in the Lower House of the
State Legislature and in the Senate. He had been a Democrat, but in 1856 at
the Presidential election, he changed his vote and was one of the only five
in Cass Township to help the "Pathfinder" toward the White House."
Who was the Pathfinder?

p 279- "among the earliest settlers was John O'Neal" This IS Cary's father
correct???????

p 280- "the Bynums were prominent, and were connected by marriage with the
O'Neal's and others. One of the boys, while carrying pumpkins from a field
on a sharpened stick, fell, and in some unaccountable wasm ran the stick
through his body, killing him almost instantly." WHO was that?????

p 283- "Old Newberry was first laid out in the fall of 1822 on land owned
by that fine old Quaker gentleman John O'Neal and the first house was built
by Moses Ritter."
In 1827 Cary O'Neal opened a store , his sotck being worth
$500..........O'Neal had the leading store for many years."

Cemetery Listings:

Henry and his wife Mary are buried at the Gilbreath/Calvin Cemetery, in
Cass Township.
Along with other O'Neall's. Does anyone want the listings for this
cemetery?
This info makes me think we need websites for cemetery listings, what do
you think?
By State, region?

So many interesting tidbits of history in this source Judy, how can I
thank you?????
Aloha,
Jill
