Hi List,
I am looking for an Emma (nee GILMAR) in Leeds & Grenville Co. Maybe I
should say that I am looking for any mention of GILMARs (and variants) in L
& G. Emma (b Augusta Twp abt 1829) has gone astray. I have several
mentions of her but none for a marriage and I have no idea of her married
name. None of the surviving family information mentions her married
surname.
My GILMORE (and variants) Outline
The earliest primary source record for my GILMAR line is as follows. By
the way, this particular record is the only 'primary source' record that I
have located for the GILMAR family stay in Grenville Co.
!Source: Some Early Census Augusta Twp. Grenville County, Ontario
1796-1848
ISBN 0-920300-93-6 by Leeds & Grenville Branch OGS
under the 1830 Census for Augusta Twp. Gilmar, William one M over 16, two
F
over 16, one F under 16 information from microfilms #C1345 and M5909
GEB Note: The female under 16 would likely be Emma.
To the best of my speculation William came to Canada from Ireland probably
in the early 1820's, possibly via the USA (Ohio/NY, family rumor). He may
have been married previously. He probably married Catherine [McLELLAN]
abt 1827 and had Emma in 1829. Francis (Frank) followed in 1831 and then
Robert (1833). Some time between 1834 and 1841 Catherine died and about
1842 William married Sarah UNKNOWN and then had several more children in
Wilmot Twp., Waterloo Co.
Robert GILMAR (my line), according to his death registration was born in
Prescott, 13 Nov 1833 which ties in well with the Augusta Twp. Census info.
I suspect that William (b 1787/95, Ireland) worked on the Erie and then
Rideau Canals.
In 1840 William received a free grant of land in Wilmot Twp., Waterloo Co.
and the family probably moved on to Wilmot about that time.
Robert (b 1833) and his brother Frank (Francis) took up land in Carrick
Twp. Bruce Co. on Cons 2 and 3 in 1856. Robert married Mary Ann LUCAS (of
Howick Twp, Huron Co.) about 1858. Robert returned with his family to
William's farm in Wilmot Co., Waterloo Co. about 1864 and eventually took
tittle to it in 1871. Robert's land in Carrick went to his brother in law
William LUCAS. I expect William GILMAR died about this time. He was
supposedly living with his daughter, Emma, in Kingston at the time of his
death. I have not located William GILMAR in the 1871 Census Index and so
must assume that he died before that.
Help locating Emma and / or any mentions of Greenville area GILMARs (and
variants) would be greatly appreciated.
Glen BRUNSKILL.
