Hi Joe & All,
In the past 2 years I've helped a genealogy friend track the Ducolon's in
early records in Leeds Co. and although we found about 20+ variations of the
spelling, from our experience it didn't seem to be confused with Ducklow.
Jane Scott of Yarker, ON is descended from them and her father has worked on
this line for more than 40 years and the name is definitely French in
origin. My friend is desc from the Mallory's and Salachy Ducolon was born a
Mallory and also was the widow of one of the several Stephen Ducolon's. She
later married James Weir and moved to Michigan.
For what it's worth, though, I've seen a DUCLOS which could be a variation
of Ducklow also. In OCFA most of the DUCKLOW's are at Perth where April
said her family ended up, and the DUKELOW's in Grenville Co. at Edwardsburgh
& Auugsta. So to contradict that statement, in Vol. 2 of the Johnstown
District Marriage Register (1847-1863) there is a marriage for an Eliza
DUCKLOW from Edwardsburgh in 1852 and there is also a baptism of a son John
in 1856, son of Michael & Sarah DUCKLOW. Go figure.
If it wasn't for spelling and migrating, think how easy genealogy would be!
;-) And please don't think you were butting in on anything. That's the way
most lists work--discussion and contributing our own experiences or
knowledge of the names people are looking for. Then we all learn from each
other.
Sandy
