Hi

I found the letter interesting, however I must have missed something. You
state that there was a comment on this letter indicating Stone's doubt of
the loyalty of the Vermonters. I could not find it. Was it on some other
letter - perhaps? There appeared to be a comment about Wiltse but not about
the rest of the settlers.

Best wishes
Jon Canwell

at the site below. Colonel Joel Stone, a Loyalist, had a mill and
forwarding business at the mouth of the Gananoque River which he felt was
vulnerable to attack by American forces on the other side of the St.
Lawrence River. The area around Stone's mill was sparsely populated and the
men had been called to militia duty near Brockville. With questionable
authority called out the 2nd Regiment of the Leeds Militia to serve at
Gananoque; the men of this regiment lived in the northern part of Leeds
County and were for the most part settlers who had come from Vermont. This
letter is in response to several letters Stone wrote to Captain Benoni
Wiltse ordering the militia to serve at Gananoque. Stone mistrusted Wiltse
and doubted the loyalty of the Vermont settlers as his comment on the letter
indicates.
