Subject: Need everyone's help/knowledge....

I am doing some work on the family "Gallagher" of Leeds Co. I recently came across the following quotation:
"As his name would indicate, he is of Irish descent, his father coming to Canada in 1836, just in time to demonstrate his natural characteristic by joining the militia and taking a hand in the defence of his newly adopted country."
My question(s):
What militia would he have joined? (He settled immediately in Harlem, Bastard Twp.) Would there have been a reason for him to have to take "a hand in the defence of his newly adopted country."? The rebellion in 1837 maybe? And if he did, if he was Irish, I'm right when I say that this rebellion had to do with the Irish? Or am I confused? I definetly need some guideance here.
Can anyone help!
Thank you so much for your time.
Heather
