I posted my reply to Mary Stewart before reading your comment concerning Israel Morey's possible origin being Maritime provinces or Quebec.
It is true the 1860 N.Y. census did list his birthplace as Canada East, but, as Mary mentions, subsequent census records list him as Canada English.
Maritime provinces did not join Canada until 1867 confederation...there were certainly Moreys (by whatever spelling)in Quebec.
In the 1920 census returns three of Israel's sons, Barrett E. in Virginia, George W. & Loren L. in Michigan, all list their father's mother tongue as French.
The 1920 census returns were only 5 years following Israel's death.
