Hi Tricia,

The House of Industry at Athens (Rear of Yonge & Escott Twp.) was more or less a "poor house" for many people (of all ages, but many elderly) who had no family or means of self support. Inmates basically worked for their keep if they were able, doing laundry, cooking, working in the garden, etc. There were similar homes in other places also.
