Hi all,
Every time I get one Pendarvis Puzzle worked out I get two more
puzzles. I hope some of you can shed a little light on this and
will help me with it.
I am seeking information and documentation on Joseph Pendarvis
(C1757/1759 Harleyville, SC - C1791 Procterville?, SC), his wife
Ann Salley (16 Dec 1752 Unknown ,SC -1828 Procterville? SC) and
their children. Joseph was the son of Brand Pendarvis (C1725
Harleyville, SC - 28 Apr 1783 Procterville?, SC) and his second
wife Ursalla Jennings (C1727/33 Italy? - C1778 buried
Procterville?, SC).
Brand first married Sertina (c1728/33 SC? - 1755+ SC) Their
children were Richard Pendarvis (C1747 Harleyville, SC - 28 Apr
1783 Procterville, SC), possibly a John Pendarvis (C1749),
possibly a Benjamin Pendarvis (9 Feb 1751/52 SC - C1783 Orangeburg
Co., SC) and possibly two daughters. Richard being the only child
documented by authorities on this family. Benjamin and Joseph,
sons of Ursallla were the only children included in Brands 16 May
1788 Will. Some question this Will. Brand and Sertina are
mentioned in a 1755 Giessendanner Baptism ceremony. Sertina and
Brand would have been divorced or separated then. In the
Pendarvis Surname Page on the OGSGS List it shows, "1754 on Sunday
December 29th in Orangeburg Church. Sarah, daughter of Thomas and
Hannah Pendarvis; born Nov. 1, 1754. Suscept. Abraham Hasford,
Sertina wife of Brand Pendarvis * * *." I read this to mean
Sertina was still living in 1754, they had separated and she had
not remarried.
Brand married second Ursalla Jennings in Apr. 1748. At this time
or about this time Brand purchased land near the Jennings Quarter
which is in Orangeburg Co., on the Edisto River just below the N.
/ S. fork. The Jennings Surname Page says Brand died 28 Apr 1783
a planter in the forks of the Edistos. I have assumed his
property was between Cannons Bridge and the forks and I show it as
near Procterville which is not named on the map. Procterville is
3 miles due east on Cannons Bridge and about a mile from the
river; it is at the intersection of county roads 163 and 907 which
is Banning Street. I am led to believe that Brands son Joseph
also lived here as Josephs children intermarried with the Zeigler
and Jennings families. Zeigler property was at Cannons Bridge on
both sides of the river and both sides of the bridge. The
Jennings were below the forks.
There is no listing of the children of Brand and Ursalla that the
experts agree on. The 15 page family tree of Joseph Pendarvis
(1645 England - 1694 Charleston), which was sent to the OGSGS List
recently, shows a child of Sertina as Benjamin (9 Feb 1751/2 -
C1783). I believe this should be Richard born before 1748 as a
child of Sertina and Benjamin as the child of Ursalla not
Sertina. This family tree also shows children of Ursalla as John
born about 1749 and Joseph who died in 1791. Joseph is correct.
The Jennings Surname Page shows children of Ursalla as, John
Pendarvis, Sgt., Militia 1781 (also Pvt.)" and "Benjamin Pendarvis
born 9 Feb 1752. As far as I know this is correct except Joseph
is missing. Is that right? The Pendarvis Surname Page gives
Joseph Pendarvis born 3 Sep 1759, Orangeburg, SC, married Anne
Salley, born 16 Dec 1752, Orangeburg, SC. * * * Joseph,
son of Thomas and Hannah _______ Pendarvis * * *. The father
of Joseph was Brand and not Thomas. I have been using this 3 Sep
1753 as Joseph birth date in error. I will use 1757/1759. His
birth date is unknown. It could be between 1748 and 1779. I have
not found a documented, believable death date for Ursalla. I will
assume and use about 1778/1779.
Brand signed a premarriage agreement on 26 Dec 1780 with Mary Frye
(1755/1762 Unknown - 1831 SC) and then married (third) her on 28
Dec. Does anyone know if this is her maiden name and/or anything
about her? None of the family tree list I have seen show any
children for Mary. After Brands death Mary Frye married about
1788 Charles Jones. After Charles Jones death Mary married
George Boutnight.
The 1790 Census which was done in 1791 shows three Pendarvises in
Orangeburg District, South Part, Joseph with six in the household
and 41 slaves, William with five in the household and one slave
and John with four in the household and one slave None of these
are in the Orangeburg County Census for 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830 or
1850. We know that Joseph was a son of Brand. I am guessing
that John was also a son of Brand. Who is this William
Pendarvis? With three children William would have been married
about 1784 and would have been born about 1763. The six shown in
Josephs household would be Joseph, his wife, Ann Salley Pendarvis
and his first four children. Joseph died and his fifth child was
born after the 1790 (1791) Census. I would assume the fifth child
would be William or Mary Ann (Polly).
It is odd that there are no Pendarvises in the Orangeburg Censuses
from 1790 until 3 May 1876, the death date of William Pendarvis.
His 100 acre farm had been on the South Edisto River in the forks
of the Edistos. I assume he lived alone on the farm and was too
old or had some problem where he could no longer take care of
himself. J. Wesley Jones, named as Williams half brother was
appointed his guardian. The 100 acre farm was sold to provide a
$50 per annum fund for his care. Half brothers means they had the
same mother, Mary Frye Pendarvis Jones. J. Wesleys father was
Charles Jones and Williams father would have to have been Brand
Pendarvis.. I dont buy the half brother bit. Brands son,
William was born about 1763 which would make him 113 years old in
1876. Let me guess Josephs son, William born about 1786 giving
an age of 90 Jun 1876which is still high. This farm is described
as bounded by S. B. Sawyer, Arron Develing (not clear?),W. H.
Moton and the South Edisto River.
I have not really researched the above and have limited
documentation. This is the way I see it from what I have found.
If you have any documentation to prove any of the above please let
me hear from you.
Best regards, Bob H. ___
