Hi all,
Here is a Holman Petition I ran into in Brent Holcom's books, "Petitions
For Land From South Carolina Council Journals".
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
[Meeting of Tuesday A. M. 6 March 1749/50] (+1750)
The Humble Petition of Andrew Holman setting forth That your Pet'r is
lately
come with his family from Rotterdam in Capt. Brown (sic) with intent of
coming
to this Province but unjustly by the said Capt. carried to Philadephia
where
your Pet'r for the Support of his Family was obliged to stay some time , he
is
now travelled with his family of a wife and five Children from Philadelphia
and desires to settle in the Forks of the Broad and Saludy River where he
has planted three sorts of Wheat to carry on the Flour Trade, prays to run
350
acres of Land in the fork between Broad and Saludy Rivers and that he may
have the same free of charge. The prayer thereof was granted.
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Gene,
Note this says Andrew was already working his land (350 acres) in the forks
of the Broad and Saluda Rivers on the date of his Petition, 6 Mar 1750 and
was probably in Philadelphia at least 2 or 3 years and, as you said,
arrived in SC in 1748 or 1749. This gives the 1736 ship captain as Brown.
Probably the older papers got it right giving the ship Harle with master
Capt. Ralph Harle.
Hi all,
When do you plant wheat? Maybe late March in SC. I would think not in
Feb. If Andrew was a wheat farmer in Germany (maybe not) wouldn't he more
likely be from the flatlands of Germany and not the hills of Wurttemberg.
Maybe the Holmans and the Zeiglers did not come from the same state in
Germany after all?
Best regards, Bob H. ___
